CYCLONE

If you have not entered the September Card of the month Contest at PostcardCollector.org its your last chance.  Contest ends Sunday, September, 30, 2012  Theme is Roller Coaster/Amusement rides     The Cyclone is my entry. What's yours?

                               The CYCLONE, Coney Island, N.Y.

Post Mark: Staten Island, June, 22, 9am, (l943) looks like.
Dear Mother & Dad,
Still having a wonderful time. Am awfully not though. I rode on this ride at Coney Island the day I told you we went over there. It was really a thrill. How is everything back home?
Love, Jane
Well Jane,
I took a ride on the CYCLONE back in 1977 I think it was. I was young and stupid! It was a thrill alright. Very frightening. A really rough ride and no safety features except a loose bar in front of me to hold onto for dear life. I must say though I will never forget it and am glad I did it. Does anyone know if it is still around?
Scared stiff,
Michael

GALAPAGOS

The New York Zoological Society has the largest colony of the Giant Galapagos Tortoises in the world at the North Miami Zoo.  This almost extinct animal is both gentle and harmless and frequently weighs a half ton or more.  They eat no meat and each eats at least 30 lbs. of vegetables daily.

I never knew of a Zoo in North Miami.  But there is a beautiful Zoo now located in South Miami.  I was there couple months ago.  I don't remember Galapagos Tortoise then.
After checking out the Zoo Website I see that you can adopt one of the Galapagos Tortoises at the Zoo now.

THE "ZOO CHOO"

The "ZOO CHOO" at Children's Zoo on Mill Mountain.
Roanoke, Va.
Children and adults alike enjoy going around the Zoo on the "Zoo Choo".  The Engineer blows the whistle and the train runs through a 100 ft. concrete tunnel.  The miniature train can carry 36 people and is one of the favorite attractions. The "Zoo Choo" was sponsored and is operated by the Roanoke Jaycees.

The "Zoo Choo" started its operation in 1952
The zoo's current train, which is owned by the Roanoke Jaycees, is being relocated to the Virginia Museum of Transportation.
That's because the Blue Ridge Zoological Society, which operates the zoo, wants to own and operate its own train.
The new Zoo Choo will be nearly identical to the old one except in color -- Thomas the Train blue instead of burnt Tuscan red.
"There will always be a Zoo Choo at the Mill Mountain Zoo," said Sean Greene, the zoo's executive director. "And this town is big enough for two miniature trains."
I remember having an incredibly exciting ride on a miniature Zoo Train as a child.   They must have been a common attraction at many a Zoo.  The Zoo in Birmingham, Alabama had a "Zoo Choo".  I wonder if it is still there and running?  After checking out the Zoo website I found out that the train is still going strong.  There are actually two.  I never knew that.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

This Floral Clock is at Roger Williams Park in Providence Rhode Island.
I have other cards I recently found of Roger Williams Park.  Let me see if I can find them.  I will post when they show up.
That wasn't too hard.  Here are a couple more cards of Roger Williams Park in Providence.

Message on back: This is house in which Betsey, descendant of Roger (noted on other card) was born, and stands now well within the limits of Roger Williams Park.  In that same Roger Williams Park, in the family cemetery, are the graves of Joseph and Joseph, Jr., Williams, and their wives, all of whom were ancestors of my wife.

They are great cards but neither is signed or addressed.  Don't know who they came from or went to.

VACANCY

While traveling along the road we need to keep our eyes open for a suitable place to get a good nights rest.  Watch for a VACANCY sign.

We are already in Florida so lets stay at the LYNMAR.  It is one of my favorites on Miami Beach.  It is located on fashionable Collins Avenue in what is now the Art Deco district called South Beach.
I can't swear to it but I imagine it is still there.  Most of those Art Deco Hotels in South Beach have been saved from destruction over the passed 30 something years.  The last Deco landmark Hotel I saw come down was the New Yorker.  That must have been around 1980.  What a shame.  I actually had a chance to go inside the vacant building just before it was destroyed.  OK it had small rooms and was in horrible shape.  Most of South Beach was in bad shape back then.  It had gone to waste.  Thank goodness for the Art Deco Preservation league and the TV show MIAMI VICE that brought attention to its beautiful Art Deco Architecture.

DUDLEY DO-RIGHT

I grew up with a fondness for the Mounties in the Red Coats.
Would not miss an episode of Dudley Do-Right.  Remember Dudley, Nell, Snidely Whiplash, and Dick Dastandly.
