Golden Gate Bridge, Spanning the Golden Gate,
Video from the 75th Anniversary Celebration
I used to say 'goodnight' to the Golden Gate Bridge every night from my bedroom window in the hills of El Cerrito in the East Bay. :) This was a fun post & especially, thanks for the videos. Not long ago, while waiting for my car to be serviced I entered into conversation with an older gentleman who was also waiting for his car. Turned out he had been an engineer on the Golden Gate Bridge not too long after it was completed & had some very interesting tales to tell about his job - some funny, some rather scary!
ReplyDeleteLovely colourful cards. The Golden Gate Bridge reminds me so much of the Forth Road bridge near Edinburgh which the Queen opened in 1964 - except the predominant colour there is grey. We lived quite close and my father enjoyed going every weekend to see how the construction was progressing.
ReplyDeleteThere's one thing I could never have been, and that's someone working on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge.. An amazing structure.
ReplyDeleteI have a few linen cards -- love them! And these are just wonderful -- the Golden Gate Bridge has always amazed me.
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago I achieved one of my life's ambitions and visited San Francisco and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge. I fell in love with the city and can't wait to return.
ReplyDeleteThat Golden Gate is iconic and instantly recognisable - one day I’ll get to see it!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure that I know what a linen postcard is but I'll keep an eye out for them. The videos were amazing - particularly the first one. Very moving. What a job.
ReplyDeleteA friend's cousin is one of the people who jumped from the bridge and died. I can still remember sitting on a chairlift in the Sierra's when she told me.
ReplyDeleteEvery time I drive across the bridge I think, "Oh please, don't let the big one hit until I'm on the other side."
I love the first card with the golfers taking up the foreground!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for our aunties, and your aunt Hannah sounds like a wonderful person to have around and get such gracious postcards too!
ReplyDeleteGreat old postcards of the Golden Gate, which I have drived across once or maybe twice. The first video is very moving, as Alex says. Here in Aus they have installed high wire fencing on the walkways of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and on The Westgate Bridge in Melbourne, even though there is a no pedestrian access to the latter, as a fellow threw his little daughter off that bridge a few years ago. Very sad!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, that should be 'driven', sorry about that!
DeleteVery vivid cards. Artists can sometimes achieve more dramatic perspectives than photographers. It is very tragic that such impressive structures are also a draw for those in despair.
