Sunday Stamps

I did not have a stamp showing Archeology; but was able to come up with something Historical.   This Holiday weekend honors the Independence of the United States of America.  I am showing stamps that were issued for the Bicentennial Celebration of the Signing of Our Declaration of Independence.

Betsy Ross House, 239 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pa.

The Betsy Ross House is a quaint little shop located on Arch Street near Third where John Ross, at the time of the Revolution kept an upholstery shop.  He died in the Continental Army and in May, 1776,  Washington and a committee employed Betsy Ross to make a simple flag containing thirteen stars and thirteen stripes which ws adopted as the national emblem.  

The building was restored in 1937 by A. Atwater Kent.

world-famed as the cradle of American liberty.  

Within its historic walls the Declaration of Independence 

                was debated and signed on July 4, 1776.

It was in Independence Hall 

that the Declaration of Independence was drawn up by a committee of 5 men.  

Its composition was assigned to Thomas Jefferson by the committee and the 

final paper was signed by 56 men representing 13 states.

Liberty Bell, Independence Hall

The Liberty Bell is on exhibition in Independence Hall at Sixth and Chestnut Sts.  It proclaimed Liberty throughout the country after the Declaration of Independence was signed, July 4, 1776.  The bell has not been rung since 1843

This is my contribution to this weeks Sepia Saturday Theme.

This is a black and white photograph taken by my 

older brother Jerry sometime in the mid to late 50's. 

It comes from a Hopkins Family Reunion.

  I was in attendance but do not remember this moment.

I think it most likely is a state park in Texas 

maybe Lake Bonham State Park.

This little Jewel is an Old Florida Treasure.

The Nature Mural in the Longue.
 The Inn’s Everglades Lounge is famous for its impressive 360-degree mural featuring the flora and fauna of the Florida Everglades. It was painted by the world-renowned artist J. Clinton Shepherd in the early 1940s. Shepherd, who spent many months at the Inn, majestically transferred to oil and canvas the beauty of the ‘glades.

The "General" Made Famous by Andrews' Raiders

Now on Exhibition at Union Depot - Chattanooga, Tennessee

The story of the General
In the National Cemetery are buried James J. Andrews and his companions, who captured an Engine at Big Shanty on the Western & Atlantic Railway in an attempt to burn bridges and cut the Confederate Army from its base of supplies.  They were overtaken; eight were executed as spies, six were paroled and eight escaped from prison.  The famous engine "General" which was captured is kept as a Memorial in the Union Station at Chattanooga. A tablet tells the story of the raid.
