 Founded in 1839, Virginia Military Institute has long been recognized as a splendid school.  The services of the V.M.I. Cadets of the Battle of New Market has gone down in history as one of the outstanding military achievements of the Civil War.

STONEWALL JACKSON MONUMENT,
LEXINGTON, VIRGINIA
Stonewall Jackson was born in 1824. He was one of the first professors of the Virginia Military institute, located at Lexington, Va., founded in 1839. Jackson later became the military genius of the Southern armies during the war between the States.  He was killed in 1863, being shot from his horse by one of the men under his command failing to recognize him thinking he was from the Union forces.

Birthplace of Helen Keller, Tuscumbia, Ala.
Back of card: Alabama's famous Helen Keller.  Today, Miss Keller is a miracle and  a wonder of the world.  In her honor the first public library in the State of Alabama was opened in Tuscumbia and named 
"The Helen Keller Library."

She died in 1968 that doesn't seem so long ago."

How I spent my Summer Vacation...

My brother Jerry flew in from San Francisco and we began our road trip in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.  We first passed through Birmingham, Alabama to visit family.
BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA

            VESTAVIA, Home of Geo. B Ward         

The country home of Mr. Geo. B. Ward, former mayor of Birmingham, on the crest of Shades Mountain, altitude 1,300 feet, 6 miles from Birmingham, Ala.  Replica of celebrated Temple of Vesta of Rome.  Destroyed in the fifth century.  Dimensions of building--70 feet high, 186 feet in circumference.   20 columns 9 feet circumference.

TABERNACLE

Erected in Grateful Remembrance of the Mercy of God to the Mormon Pioneers.
Sea Gull Monument, Temple Block,
Monument erected in commemoration of the Miraculous Delivery of the Mormon Pioneers from starvation when a plague of crickets threatened destruction of their crops in 184 and 1849.  Flocks of Sea Gulls appeared and preyed upon the destroyers until the pests vanished and the people were saved.  Since then the Gulls have been protected in Utah by Legislative Enactment.

Newest of Salt Lake City Hotels, the Hotel Temple Square with its 200 comfortable rooms is located opposite fascinating Temple Square providing the city's favorite Coffee Shop and an ideal starting point for sightseeing and shopping.

Message on back:  July, 18, 1959  Here for one night.  
Temple is beautiful. 97 yesterday but dry.  Enjoyed this hotel.
