Going to be lots of parties and goings on this week in D.C. 

What better way to enjoy this time than by reminiscing of how things use to be.   And how we can make them better for tomorrow.

Chalks Airways once operated Sea Planes across Biscayne Bay on Watson Island.
"I remember those flights.   Thirty five years ago when I moved to Miami I thought those Sea Planes were so cool.  I had never seen them in action before.  It was quite a fun experience to watch them take off and land.  I have to say in the time I have lived here the downtown skyline has changed incredibly, from a big town to a major city."

The airline was founded by Arthur "Pappy" Chalk, and started ad-hoc charter operations as the Red Arrow Flying Service in 1917. After "Pappy" Chalk served in the Army Air Service in World War I, he returned to Miami and commenced scheduled service between Miami and Bimini in the Bahamas in February 1919 as Chalk's Flying Service. Chalk's first base was a beach umbrella on the Miami shore of Biscayne Bay. In 1926 a landfill island, Watson Island, was created in Biscayne Bay close to Miami. Chalk's built an air terminal there, and operated from the island for the next 75 years.

Let's do a little sight-seeing today.

We can check out the Planetarium and a couple fantastic Museums.



The Hayden Planetarium, on 81st street and Central Park West.
Of New York's many interesting sights, perhaps the most popular is the new Hayden Planetarium.  Here, under a vast dome is spread the whole drama of the Heavens by means of the Zeiss Projector which shows light images of the thousands of stars that are visible to the naked eye.  Each presentation is accompanied by a lecture on astronomy, and the planetarium becomes at once a school, a theatre and a motion picture where man presents the Universe.

American Museum of Natural History, located at 77th Street and Central Park West, was founded in 1869 as a museum and library of natural history.  Among the exhibits are numerous animal and bird groups, dinosaur skeletons, Mexican and Peruvian material, extensive  collections of gems, jades, ivories and amber.  The right wing is the new Roosevelt Memorial Hall.

Metropolitan Museum of Art this is one of New York's most interesting show places.  It is located in Central Park at 5th Avenue and 82nd Street.  In its collections are priceless paintings, statuary, tapestries, armor, jewels and furniture.

SALTAIR PAVILION, GREAT SALT LAKE, UTAH

"TRY TO SINK"

I have stopped at Saltair twice on road trips.  For some reason it always seemed to work out that we arrived around lunch time.  The pavilion is not the original you see here but is quite large.  I have to say not much happening the times I passed by.  The place is pretty empty no restaurant or other concessions that I remember.  There is a gift shop and some sort of small exhibit from the Bonneville Salt Flats.  Looks like the pavillion may host concerts from time to time but not much more.   A few years have passed now, maybe it has taken a trun for the better.  You know I never did get in Salt Lake and try to sink.

My second year in N. Y. I lived on 37th between Park and Madison Avenues.
Took many walks up Park Avenue to the station to catch the trains.
Thank goodness the cars on the street were not quite this old.

 You know we have some pretty unusual sights here in this GREAT U. S. A.
Thats a whole lot of Salt.   Luv Sights of Utah  They have some Grand ones.

Thought the Salt attached to the card was a clever item of the time.
I doubt that it would even be allowed in the mail service today.
The Salt Flats are amazing to see.
Talk about Spilt Salt.

I just love this card.  I have had it in my collection for many years.  I think it was one of those cards that made me say "I must have more".
