Columbia Spanish Restaurant

I never had a chance to go to the Columbia in Tampa.  I did go to the one in St. Augustine a couple of times.  It is really a pretty and nice place to eat, the food is terrific.  Check out their website link below.  If you go to the photo gallery on the site then click on the St. Augustine picture you can scroll down to the second CR dining room picture. The table the waitress is using the pepper mill was the table my brother and I sat at last September when we came through St. Augustine.

I have to say I have been lucky enough to have been in the Valley twice.  It is absolutely incredible.  It is truly a spiritual spot.  You can just feel it in your heart.  It is overwhelming  and hard to belive you are not dreaming.  The location is right in the middle of nowhere on the Arizona, Utah state line. The first time I visited there was a nice visitor facility.  It is a fantastic drive through the valley.  The light, the color, the clouds, the wind, the sounds, it is almost surrealistic to experience.  The second time I went through the Valley there was a Navajo wedding taking place.  That was a special time with so many interesting things taking place.  The native dress, the horses, the wagons, the music, all amazing.

The second time I visited the visitor center was closed and I wondered what was to become of the tourist trade.  That must have been just prior to the construction of the View Hotel.  I sure would love to go back and stay for Sunrise.  Sunset was marvelous.

BROWN DERBY,  LOS ANGELES

Opened in 1926, the original restaurant at 3427 Wilshire Boulevard remains the most famous due to its distinctive shape. Whimsical architecture was popular at the time, and the restaurant was designed to catch the eye of passing motorists. It is said that the shape of the hat worn by New York governor and 1928 Democratic Party presidential candidate Al Smith, a personal friend of Somborn, was an inspiration. Another theory claims that Somborn was told that a good restaurateur could serve food out of a hat and still make a success of it. 

The small cafe, close to popular Hollywood hot spots such as Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel, became successful enough to warrant the building of a second branch.

               

Despite its less distinctive Spanish Mission style facade, the second Brown Derby, which opened on Valentine's Day 1929 at 1628 North Vine Street in Hollywood, was the branch that played the greater part in Hollywood history. Due to its proximity to movie studios, it became the place to do deals and be seen. Clark Gable is said to have proposed to Carole Lombard there. Rival gossip columnists Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper are recorded as regular patrons.
In "L.A. at Last," the first of the Hollywood episodes of I Love Lucy, Lucy (Lucille Ball), Ethel (Vivian Vance), and Fred (William Frawley) have lunch at the Brown Derby. During the misadventure, the trio dines in a booth with Eve Arden on one side and William Holden on the other. This leads to the famous disaster scene in which Lucy inadvertently causes a waiter to hit Holden in the face with a pie.

The third Brown Derby, built in 1931 at 9537 Wilshire Blvd. in Beverly Hills, greatly resembled the Hollywood branch. It was closed in the early 1980s and demolished in 1983.

The Los Feliz Brown Derby at 4500 Los Feliz Blvd is the last remaining branch of the chain still extant and in operation. Film mogul Cecil B. De Mille, a part owner of the Wilshire Blvd. restaurant, bought the building, a former chicken restaurant named Willard's, and converted it into a Brown Derby in 1940. It uniquely combined a formal restaurant with a dramatic domed ceiling with a more casual drive-in cafe outside.

This house, thirteen years under construction and still unfinished, combines many sensational features of modern house construction for comfort and convenience.  Packed full of unique ideas and step-saving devices.   Beautiful hand-laid tile work and landscaping add much interest to the building.  A surprise at every turn.

Conrad Schuck was the 49-year-old owner of a building supply company in Pittsburgh when his doctor told him he had roughly one year to live. He might live a few months longer, his doctor said, if he moved to a warmer climate.

Thirteen years later, Schuck was still working on his 'Wonder House,' a four-story, 5,300-square-foot mansion on Mann Road in Bartow. The intriguing 18-room structure, which Schuck opened to the public in 1934, served as a local tourist attraction for roughly 30 years.

Just had a delicious meal at Paddy's Clam House, 215 West 34th St. Quite a busy place. Imagine serving between 2,000 and 3,000 customers daily! Fish, Shellfish and French fries as we love it - at the most reasonable prices. The whole broiled Lobster is the talk of the town. Paddy has asked me to invite you to drop in when you come to New York City.

Paddy's Clam House, 215 W. 34th St., is one of the largest and oldest seafood establishments in New York. Paddy (Joseph Patrick) White opened his first clam house in the Bronx more than 60 years ago and moved to the present location 26 years ago. He is now 80 and engaged in writing a book to be titled Eat Fish, Live Longer. Paddy, born in Philadelphia, learned his trade at the oyster bar of Delmonico's. He still maintains that Lorenzo Delmonico was the greatest restaurateur of all time. Paddy established a record 59 years ago for opening clams—100 in 3 minutes, 20 seconds—and claims this record has never been beaten. Today, his West 34th St. restaurant serves i,000 people daily; disposes of 5,000 lobsters, 50 bushels of shellfish and 1,700 pounds of fish per week. The restaurant features wooden-topped tables and makes no pretentions to elegant service or appointments. And, Paddy boasts, people stand in line for his $2.55 five-course lobster dinner on Sundays. Paddy is an avid fight fan, has known all the champs, and used to travel around the country to catch all the big fights of the past half century.

Was in the Capital city last summer.  Hadn't been there in many years.  It was a fantastic trip.  Spent days and days in the museums of the Smithsonian.  Didn't remember how really beautiful our nation's capital is.  We will spend more time in D.C. later.  I have to do some searching and scanning before our visit.

No, not Davy Jones of the Monkees. Davy Jones as in Davy Jones' Locker, the place in the depths where you legendarily go when drowned at sea. Despite the downer name, the postcard makes it look like a decent place for fish and crustaceans, along the lines of the Oyster Bar at Grand Central. In the magazine The Rotarian (1959), critic Fred A. Roozen in his "Gourmet in Gotham" column writes, "It seems that of all the many seafood restaurants, each is more famous than the other. One of the best is Davy Jones Sea Food House ..." Craig Claiborne in not so kind: "The broiled fish dishes are smothered in paprika to make up for improper grilling. A waiter denied that the sticky orange stuff over the salad greens was patented glue, while at another table one of his colleagues was explaining to a couple that he didn't know if the fish was fresh or not and offhand he couldn't think of anyone who might know."

No longer exhists.   It moved to Watson Island between Miami and Miami Beach.    Recently it became known as Jungle Island.   It's sad when such a charming place as Parrot Jungle is gone.  Nothing can ever really replace it.  The original gardens and flock of Flamingos were as much a part of the spectacle as were the parrots.
