Founded in 1839, Virginia Military Institute has long been recognized as a splendid school. The services of the V.M.I. Cadets of the Battle of New Market has gone down in history as one of the outstanding military achievements of the Civil War.

STONEWALL JACKSON MONUMENT,

Stonewall Jackson was born in 1824. He was one of the first professors of the Virginia Military institute, located at Lexington, Va., founded in 1839. Jackson later became the military genius of the Southern armies during the war between the States. He was killed in 1863, being shot from his horse by one of the men under his command failing to recognize him thinking he was from the Union forces.
