Sepia Saturday

Bringing new memories to old images.

When I was a child I visited this towel shop with my Aunt Hannah, her husband Stud, and granddaughter Jane.  Aunt Hannah was quite a character.  She loved to crochet, seemingly 24 hours a day.  Every towel in our house had crocheted borders.  She bought towels by the pound I think.  They made beautiful gifts for any occasion.  Actually Hannah is the inspiration for this blog.
She was my Auntie Mame.

Bagley Avenue, Birthplace of Ford Car,
Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan
In this brick shed at the rear of 58 Bagley Avenue,  Mr. Ford carried on some of his early automobile experiments while employed as an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company.  Three lathes, drill presses and hand tools are those used in building his first car.  The right hand door had to be torn out and made larger because Mr. Ford forgot to measure the door when he built the car inside.

INDIANA TERRITORY

FIRST CAPITOL OF INDIANA TERRITORY
AND DISTRICT OF LOUISIANA, VINCENNES, IND.
THOUSANDS EVERY YEAR VISIT THIS BUILDING WHERE THE FIRST INDIANA LAWS WERE ENACTED.

First Capitol of Indiana Territory   This building was occupied by the Territorial Government and was situated on the south side off Main Street,  midway between Second and Third Street.  About 100 years ago it was moved to Third Street near Harrison Park and used as a residence.  In 1919 the Fortnightly Club of Vincennes, through public donation, perchased the building and moved it to its present site in Harrison Park where it now stands restored in its original condition.  The upper floor was the meeting place of the legislative body and the lower was occupied by the governor and the secretary of the Territory.

HISTORIC OLD CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL,
LIBRARY AND RECTORY, VINCENNES, IND.
THE LIBRARY CONTAINS SOME OF THE
OLDEST BOOKS AND RELICS IN THE COUNTRY.

St. Francis Xavier Church was founded in 1702.  The present stately old Cathedral is the third church on this site and was projected in 1825, the corner stone being laid with elaborate ceremony in 1826.  Its two predecessors for worship were built of logs, the first of which Indian converts assisted in erecting.  Thirty nine pastors have served this church during these many years.  Seven of these have attained high positions in the church, six as bishops and one as archbishop.  The four first bishops of the diocese of Vincennes are buried in the crypt of the present church.  The diocese is now known as "Indianapolis."  The library contains some of the oldest books and rarest manuscripts in this section of the country.

I drove by Michie Tavern a couple of times this past summer.   Did not know anything about its history until now.  It is located on the entry road  outside Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson.
Michie Tavern is located one mile southeast from Charlottesville, Va.  on the Monticello Road.  This historic old tavern has been restored and is furnished from Revolutionary and Colonial periods, and is open to the public.

Sepia Saturday

I didn't have any Historical Sepia Cards from the Great War,
100 years past.  But I was able to come up with this card of a young boy in uniform showing respect for the Soldiers
who have gone before.
The card is dated 5/11/18
With Best Wishes
to Emma and Family
From Little Georgie Fleming

The Card has been identified at top in hand print as:
HIPPODROME PERFORMER
Looks like Little Georgie may have been on stage spreading the Patriotic Ideal.

San Antonio

SAN FERNANDO CATHEDRAL
The Original Parish Church of San Antonio
"The old cathedral" has watched over the city through 200 years of struggle and progress.  During the siege of the Alamo it was held by Santa Anna, and his flag flew from its towers.  From these same towers had flown Texans' flag of victory a short time before.  Tradition says that soon after the fall of the Alamo, an influential Mexican, whose sympathies were with the Texans, gathered together what bones of the heroes he could find, and buried them ,  secretly under the altar of San Fernando.  The church has always been kept in perfect repair and is in daily constant use.  Visitors are welcome.
